But your ability to move past those mistakes is I guess what can make you or break you as a band. Prentice: The funny thing is, you always try to make it look as effortless as possible on stage, but I guarantee that with any band you ever watch there will always be a couple of mistakes in every single show. So, on to gigs past and present, have you guys ever experienced an embarrassing moment on stage? I really like happiness in retrospect and, in our most recent single Tigerblood I really like the line a little bit of tiger blood.Īlso, in Retrospect, in the second verse, it says Nevertheless acquiesce till you feel those butterflies and I think that’s quite a good lyric, I was happy with that! Prentice: I’ve never really thought about it too much! I guess that, usually, the hook like of all of our songs is my favourite (maybe because I’m a slave to pop music!) And, again, they were terrible, but it’s cool to look back and remember them.ĭo you have a favourite lyric from any of the songs you’ve written? Weirdly, I was clearing out my room the other day and I found a couple of lyrics sheets and random chords from songs I wrote when I was around 14. So yeah, that was the first song I ever wrote. It was absolutely terrible! But at the time, when you’re like 11 years old, it was like ‘oh my god this is the best thing we’ve ever done!’. Prentice: *laughs* I actually can remember the first song I ever wrote: I was in a band… well… I wouldn’t actually say it was a band… but me and my friend recorded a song on tape in his spare room and it was called Down Town. I’d like to think I’ve hopefully found a skill in writing songs and, when I discovered this, it’s where I’ve wanted to go ever since.Ĭan you remember the first song you ever wrote? Was it when you were younger? Or were you just focusing on the magic back then… Then there was a period where I wanted to do acting… so I think I’ve always wanted to do something performance based. I used to love magic – maybe the least cool sentence anyone in a band has ever said – and I wanted to do that initially. Prentice: I guess so! I mean, I’ve always wanted to do something performance-related. Have you always known that you wanted to be a songwriter? With regards to the songwriting side of the music, I understand that it’s you who does the majority of this in the band. I heard, in an interview, from Spector actually, that good band names consist of two syllables, so we kind of based it on that, and we came up with a wee list of names and Vistas was at the forefront of that list. We wanted something that sounded snappy and that was easy to remember. Prentice: The story is that we had a terrible band name before and we were like right let’s get a fresh start, like a ‘new year new me’ kind of situation. Is there a specific story behind the name Vistas? Or did you just think it sounded cool? The reason we originally started playing music together was just for fun because it was a common interest that we all had and it was something that we all wanted to do and, luckily, it has turned into something more than just a hobby. It was originally just going to be myself, our drummer and our bassist as a three piece, but with the songs we were writing, we felt that we needed that extra element and so we got Dylan in to play guitar as well. Just after we left school, we decided to take it a bit more seriously. Prentice: Yeah! We all met in high school. How did you all meet? Were you all friends before the band was created? Essentially on the first day of January! We started sort of planning – if you can call it that – what to do with the band at the end of 2015, over the Christmas holidays, and then we pulled everything together and launched the band in January of 2016. Prentice: We started out at the very, very start of 2016. So, talk to me about how Vistas came to be: When was it that the band came to life? With their latest release Tigerblood commanding attention with its memorable beat and uplifting lyrics it was a perfect time to catch up with Prentice and to find out more about Vistas and their exciting future in the industry. A little while ago I had the amazing opportunity to have a chat with Prentice, the lead singer of Vistas: an up and coming band hailing from Scotland who are already making big waves across the music circuit.
